What the Malta e-Residence card is
The e-Residence card is a biometric identity document issued by Identity Malta. It serves as proof of your legal right to live in Malta, gives you Schengen mobility, and provides the foundation for permanent residency and eventual citizenship.
For students, the card is initially valid 1 year from issuance, renewable annually until your study program ends. After graduation, you convert to a different residence status (post-study work visa → Single Permit).

Timeline from arrival to card delivery
Step-by-step:
Day 0: Arrive in Malta

Day 7-30: Book biometrics appointment

Annual renewal process

Lost or stolen card

During the replacement period, the police report + your passport serve as proof of legal status. Keep both with you.
Address change notifications
If you move during your residence period, you must notify Identity Malta within 30 days. Procedure:
- Log in to Identity Malta online portal
- Update address with new rental contract or proof of accommodation
- No fee for address change (administrative update only)
- Update your university/employer + bank simultaneously
Failure to notify can void your residence card on next renewal.
Family reunification process
After 6 months of legal residence in Malta, you can apply for family reunification for:
- Spouse / registered partner
- Children under 18 (or under 21 if dependent + still in education)
- Dependent parents over 65 with proof of financial dependence + sponsor income above national median (~€20K/year)
Documents needed per dependent:
- Apostilled marriage/birth certificate

- EU Blue Card — Salary ≥ €58K + STEM/healthcare field. Easier EU mobility.
