1. From D visa to temporary residence permit — what happens after you land
The Lithuanian national visa — the D visa — is the entry document issued at the Lithuanian embassy in your home country, usually through the external service provider VFS Global (VSF Global Services in some country listings). It gets you into the Republic of Lithuania and starts your first semester. But it is not your permanent residence document. As a non-EU citizen, within 3 months of your first entry into Lithuania on the national visa, you must apply for a temporary residence permit at the Migration Department. The TRP is the study based TRP — the residence basis for non EU students who come to Lithuania to study. This Lithuanian visa to residence-permit application process is the same for every non EU citizen on a study route, whether you arrived on a valid visa for a degree, an exchange, or a foundation year.
The TRP is the document that gives you full legal stay in Lithuania — and with it, the Schengen travel rights that come with Lithuanian residence. The D visa alone (whether single-entry national visa or multi-entry) does not automatically confer the full Schengen travel package that the TRP does. The TRP is also the document that: (1) proves your right to work 20 hours/week; (2) allows you to open a Lithuanian bank account more easily — your bank account statement later becomes useful evidence for renewals; (3) is the basis for the 2-year post-study permit after graduation. A valid travel document (your valid passport with at least two blank pages) is the foundation of every stage.
At Birlay we have processed enough Lithuania applications to know that the mediation letter is where most files stall — the Lithuanian higher education institution issues a mediation letter (with a mediation letter number) that the embassy and the Migration Department both check against the AIKOS registry. Our students from India and Pakistan most often ask whether they can apply for the temporary residence permit from their home country before travelling — the honest answer is no for the study-based TRP: you enter on the national visa, then apply in Lithuania. We verified directly with the Migration Department that the personal MIGRIS account (the Lithuanian Migration Information System) is the channel where you submit the online application and track the TRP decision.
2. TRP registration process — step by step from arrival to permit issued
Arrive in Lithuania on D national visa
Enter Lithuania through Vilnius Airport (VNO), Kaunas Airport (KUN), or any land border crossing. Your D visa entry is registered in the Schengen Information System. Retain your passport with the D visa entry stamp — this is your proof of lawful entry date for TRP timeline purposes.
Declare your place of residence — within 7 days
All foreigners entering Lithuania must declare residence (declare their place of residence) within 7 days of arrival. If you live in a university dorm, the dorm administration typically registers your address automatically (confirm this with the dorm office on arrival day). If you live in a private flat, you must register your address yourself at the Migration Department or municipality office. Failure to register within 7 days is a separate violation from the TRP application.
Prepare the required documents
The following documents are the required documents (the supporting documents) for the study-based student TRP application — and yes, this is the full list of documents required: valid passport (valid travel document) with at least two blank pages and the D visa entry stamp; completed TRP application form (the e-application, available at the Migration Department or the migris.lt online system); a document confirming university enrollment in an AIKOS-registered programme (the mediation letter / official letter confirming enrolment); proof of your declared place of residence (dorm letter or rental contract); evidence of sufficient financial resources — a bank account statement or sponsor letter showing enough funds (a sufficient amount) to cover the entire period of studies; valid health insurance with minimum coverage of €30,000; biometric data (a biometric photograph, with fingerprints taken at the appointment); the state fee (approximately €26–40 for a student TRP application). Bring original documents to the appointment even where digital copies were uploaded to your personal MIGRIS account.
Submit TRP application at Migration Department
The Migration Department (Migracijos departamentas) has offices in Vilnius (main office and service points), Kaunas, Klaipeda, Šiauliai, and Panevėžys. The main Vilnius office serves the majority of student applications. Appointments can be booked online via migris.lt. Under the general procedure, the online application is filed electronically through the MIGRIS online service portal (the e-application) for most student categories — check current eligibility on migris.lt. Where a visa application centre or external service provider is involved (this happens at the embassy stage abroad, not in Lithuania), confirm visa requirements and the list of supporting documents in advance.
Biometric data at the Migration Department
Biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) is taken at the Migration Department appointment. It is used for the TRP card (which is a biometric ID card similar format to EU national ID cards). No separate biometrics centre — it is done at the same appointment as the TRP submission.
TRP issued and card collected
Processing time: typically 4–6 weeks from complete application submission. The Migration Department issues the TRP card, which you collect at the office or receive by post (fee applies). The TRP card shows: your name, nationality, date of birth, residence permit category (student), validity period, and permit number. Keep this card with your passport at all times.
| Stage | Document | Timeline from arrival | Key requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Entry on D national visa | Arrival day | Retain D visa entry stamp in passport |
| Days 1–7 | Address registration | Within 7 days | Dorm auto-registers OR self-register at Migration Dept / municipality |
| Weeks 2–4 | TRP application filed | Within 3 months | AIKOS enrollment confirmation; financial proof; health insurance |
| Weeks 6–10 | TRP card issued | 4–6 weeks after filing | Collect at Migration Department |
| After TRP | Full Schengen travel rights | From TRP issuance | TRP card = your EU/Schengen residence document |
3. The AIKOS fast-track and TRP — why enrollment quality matters
The AIKOS fast-track is the term we use to describe the combination of: (1) confirmed AIKOS-registered enrollment, (2) university-issued invitation letter with AIKOS programme code, (3) Migration Department TRP application with these documents as the basis. When all three are in place, the Migration Department processes student TRP applications on the standard 4–6 week timeline without additional scrutiny.
The Migration Department uses the AIKOS registry directly to verify that the enrolled programme qualifies as the basis for the study-based TRP. Under the general procedure, a clean AIKOS-verified file produces a positive TRP decision and a TRP card that is typically issued within the 4–6 week window. Applications where the programme cannot be verified on AIKOS are flagged for additional review, which adds weeks. Applications where the programme is definitively not on AIKOS are rejected.
At Birlay we tell India and Pakistan families upfront about the financial reality the Migration Department checks: you must show sufficient financial resources for the entire period — enough funds in a bank account statement, not a one-off deposit. In our experience the document-confirming step (the mediation letter matching the AIKOS programme code) adds two to three weeks if the university issues it late, which is why we chase the mediation letter number before the student leaves their home country.
4. Extending your temporary residence permit during studies
Lithuanian student TRPs are issued for the duration of the enrolled programme, up to a maximum of 1–2 years per issuance (varies by Migration Department decision). For multi-year programmes (3-year bachelor's, 2-year master's), TRP extension applications must be filed before the current TRP expires.
TRP extension document requirements are similar to the original application: valid passport, current TRP card, enrollment confirmation for the continuing programme (updated from university), proof of ongoing financial means, valid health insurance. The extension is processed at the Migration Department — online via MIGRIS is available for many categories. File the extension application at least 2 months before your current TRP expiry date.
5. The 2-year post-study permit — Lithuania's EU career launch
After completing a programme at an AIKOS-registered Lithuanian university, non-EU graduates can apply for a 2-year post-study Temporary Residence Permit. This is one of the most valuable features of the Lithuania student route and a core part of the Birlay Lithuania package proposition.
Post-study TRP eligibility
- Completion of a full degree programme (bachelor's, master's, or PhD) at an AIKOS-registered university
- Current valid residence status in Lithuania (TRP as a student) at the time of application
- Application filed within the current TRP validity period — do not allow TRP to expire before applying for post-study permit
What the post-study TRP gives you
- 2 years of continued Lithuanian residence — no employer sponsorship required at application stage
- Full-time work rights — any employer, any sector, no hour limits
- Full Schengen travel rights — continued from student TRP
- Basis for permanent residence countdown — post-study TRP years count toward the 5-year total for permanent residence eligibility
The 2-year permit is designed to let graduates job-search and engage in legal activities while they line up a future employer. Once you have an offer, you can switch to a work-based TRP — and graduates who qualify as highly qualified workers can move onto the EU Blue Card track. Doctoral students and graduates who can show reasonable prospects of employment in their field are treated favourably. There are also other grounds for staying that we walk students through: family reunification (bringing family members to Lithuania once your residence is stable) is the most common, with its own family members document set.
Updated June 2026: the Vilnius labour market for Lithuanian degree graduates includes roles at Vinted, Revolut Lithuania (licensed in Lithuania, growing Vilnius office), NordVPN/Nord Security, TransferGo, and the expanding financial services shared services sector. English-medium Lithuanian degrees (ISM, MRU) are recognised by these employers. Lithuanian language proficiency significantly improves placement rates at Lithuanian-headquartered companies.
6. Permanent residence and the EU path — what 5 years in Lithuania gives you
After 5 years of continuous legal residence in Lithuania — combining student TRP and post-study TRP periods, always held on a valid temporary residence permit without gaps — non-EU nationals become eligible for a Lithuanian Permanent Residence Permit. This permit is the Lithuanian implementation of the EU Long-Term Resident Directive (Council Directive 2003/109/EC) and gives the holder EU Long-Term Resident (EU LTR) status.
| Milestone | Residence status | Years required | Key rights gained |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrival | D visa → TRP (student) | Year 0 | Study, work 20 hrs/wk in term, full Schengen travel |
| After graduation | TRP post-study | Year 3–5 | Full-time work, any employer, continued Schengen travel |
| After 5 years total | Permanent Residence Permit (EU LTR) | Year 5 | Indefinite Lithuanian residence; right to settle in other EU states as long-term resident; EU-equivalent employment rights in Lithuania |
| After 10 years + naturalisation | Lithuanian citizenship (EU passport) | Year 10 | EU citizenship; visa-free worldwide travel (Lithuanian passport is top-tier); right to live/work/vote in all EU states |
Naturalisation requirements for Lithuanian citizenship include: Lithuanian language proficiency (B1 level), constitutional knowledge examination, proof of continuous legal residence for 10 years, and in most cases renunciation of original citizenship (Lithuania generally does not permit dual citizenship for non-EU nationals who naturalise, with specific exceptions for EU citizens and some bilateral agreements). Once you become a Lithuanian citizen, the EU passport gained through naturalisation gives access to 188+ countries visa-free — stronger than India (57 visa-free), Pakistan (31), Nigeria (44), or Bangladesh (40) passports. It also opens free movement to every other EU country. Students from the following countries — including high-mobility nationalities such as South Korea — already enjoy visa-free entry to Lithuania for short stays, but a study residence permit is still required to live and study long-term; the citizenship endpoint is what turns a single study route into worldwide mobility.

Frequently asked questions
How long after arriving in Lithuania do I have to apply for a residence permit?
You must file your Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) application within 3 months (90 days) of your first entry into Lithuania on the D national visa. This is a statutory deadline under the Lithuanian Law on Legal Status of Aliens. Missing this deadline creates a legal violation and can result in fines. We advise students to file in weeks 2–4 after arrival to allow time for any document requests from the Migration Department before the deadline.
What is the difference between the D visa and the temporary residence permit?
The D national visa is the entry document issued by the Lithuanian consulate in your home country — it allows you to enter Lithuania and begin your studies. The Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) is the long-term residence document issued by the Lithuanian Migration Department after you arrive. The TRP is the document that gives you full Schengen travel rights, proves your right to work 20 hours/week, and forms the basis for the 2-year post-study permit and eventual permanent residence. You must convert your D visa to a TRP within 3 months of arrival.
Can I travel to other EU countries while my TRP application is being processed?
Yes, within limits. While your TRP application is being processed (the 4–6 week window), your D visa is still valid. You can travel within the Schengen area using the D visa — Lithuanian national D visas are generally accepted for Schengen travel (D visas are treated as residence equivalent for Schengen travel purposes under EU law). However, confirm with the Lithuanian Migration Department and your travel destination country's border authorities before traveling during TRP processing, as individual country border enforcement can vary.
How many years do I need to live in Lithuania to get permanent residence?
You need 5 years of continuous legal residence in Lithuania to apply for Permanent Residence. This 5-year period includes time spent as a student (on TRP), post-study (on the 2-year post-study TRP), and any period of employment-based residence. 'Continuous' means without gaps — periods outside Lithuania exceeding 6 consecutive months in a single year, or 10 months total over the 5-year period, may interrupt the continuity of residence for permanent residence calculation purposes.
Does a Lithuanian residence permit give EU citizenship?
Not directly — it gives a path. Lithuanian residency (TRP, then permanent residence) after 5 years gives EU Long-Term Resident status, which allows you to settle in other EU countries and has near-equivalent rights to EU citizenship within Lithuania. Full Lithuanian citizenship (and therefore EU citizenship) requires 10 years of continuous residence plus: Lithuanian language proficiency at B1 level, constitutional knowledge examination, and in most cases renunciation of your original citizenship. Lithuanian citizenship gives an EU passport that provides visa-free access to 188+ countries.
