What to do after finishing your course in Portugal: a complete roadmap
"After helping 120+ students, the question I hear most is 'What happens when my course ends?' The answer depends on your situation, but the key insight is: start planning your next step in month 6 of your course, not month 12. Students who wait until the last month face a 3-month gap in legal status. Those who plan ahead transition seamlessly."
You have 5 legal options to stay in Portugal after finishing your vocational course: (1) enroll in another course, (2) find a job and switch to a work permit, (3) start a business, (4) apply for permanent residency after 5 years, or (5) pursue Portuguese citizenship. Study time on a valid residence permit counts toward the 5-year PR requirement.
Your 5 options after completing your course
Option 1: Continue Studying
You can extend your residence permit by enrolling in another DGERT course or a higher education program. This is the simplest option — your permit renewal is straightforward as long as you maintain enrollment.
Switch to a different course or school Upgrade from vocational to university Renewal fee: €108 + updated documents Time counts toward permanent residency
Option 2: Find a Job
Switch from a student residence permit to a work permit under Article 88 or 89. Portugal's tech sector has a massive shortage — approximately 900,000 IT workers needed.
Process: Find employer → Get job contract → Apply for work permit change at AIMA → Continue with same residence card.
Option 3: Start a Business
Apply for the D2 entrepreneur visa. Portugal is increasingly startup-friendly with low corporate tax for small businesses and a growing ecosystem in Lisbon and Porto.
Option 4: Permanent Residency
Contrary to what some platforms claim, time spent on a student residence permit IS counted toward the 5-year permanent residency requirement under Portuguese law.
After 5 years of continuous legal residence in Portugal, you can apply for permanent residency (Autorizacao de Residencia Permanente).
Requirements for PR:
5 years of continuous legal residence (student time counts) A2 Portuguese language certificate Clean criminal record Financial stability (proof of income or savings)
Legal basis: Lei n.o 23/2007 · Source: Diario da Republica Electronico (dre.pt)
Option 5: Portuguese Citizenship
After permanent residency (or after 5 years of legal residence directly), you can apply for Portuguese citizenship. Portugal allows dual citizenship — you don't have to give up your original passport.
