Lithuania student visa requirements 2026 — D national visa complete guide

By Dr. Rasa Petrauskas · Senior Education Consultant — Lithuania · Last updated: 8 June 2026 · Reviewed by Marius Jonauskas (Lithuania Bar #5412, immigration & education law). The complete document-by-document guide to the Lithuanian national D visa for students in 2026: what AIKOS registration means for your eligibility, what financial proof the consulate actually requires, and what causes rejections — from ten years of filing D visa applications for students from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and CIS countries.

Quick Answer

Lithuania issues a national D visa for students enrolled in AIKOS-registered universities. Core requirements for 2026:

  • AIKOS-registered enrollment: programme must appear in the AIKOS state registry (aikos.smm.lt)
  • Formal invitation letter from the university citing AIKOS programme code
  • Financial proof: €3,000–5,000 in accessible bank funds (3 months statements)
  • Health insurance: minimum €30,000 cover, valid in Lithuania
  • Processing time: 4–8 weeks at Lithuanian consulate
  • Visa type: national D visa (long-stay) — NOT a Schengen C visa (short-stay)
  • After arrival: register temporary residence permit within 3 months at the Migration Department

In my ten years of filing Lithuanian student D visa applications from our Vilnius desk, the rejection pattern is almost always the same: either no AIKOS-registered enrollment (student applied to a programme not on the registry), or incomplete financial proof (bank statements covering less than 3 months, or fixed deposits that cannot be accessed). In 2026, I have not seen a single complete, AIKOS-anchored file rejected. The process is predictable if you follow it correctly. The AIKOS fast-track works — but only if the AIKOS check comes first, before the deposit, before the invitation letter, before the consulate appointment.

1. D national visa vs C Schengen visa — the critical difference for students

There are two fundamentally different visa types that a non-EU citizen can hold to be in Lithuania, and they are not interchangeable. Understanding which one applies to students is the first requirement. The student route — the national D study visa — is the one that gives you a legal basis to live, study, and later work in Lithuania, and eventually move freely across the European Union once your residence card is granted.

FeatureNational D Visa (student)Schengen C Visa (visitor)
PurposeLong-stay: study, work, family reunificationShort-stay: tourism, business visit, transit
DurationUp to 1 year; renewable via TRPUp to 90 days in any 180-day period
Work rightsYes — 20 hrs/week during term; full-time in holidaysNo — tourist-grade access only
Schengen travelYes — full mobility after TRP issuedYes — up to 90/180 days (consumed by Lithuania stay)
Basis for TRPYes — required to convert to TRP after arrivalNo — cannot convert tourist visa to student residence
AIKOS requiredYes — AIKOS-registered enrollment is the legal basisNo — but cannot enroll as a student
Post-study permitYes — 2-year post-study TRP after graduationNo
You cannot study on a Schengen C visitor visa
A Schengen C visa allows you to enter Lithuania as a tourist or for a short business visit. It does not allow enrollment as a degree student, it does not allow work, and it cannot be converted to a student residence permit while you are in Lithuania. Students who arrive on a tourist visa intending to convert it to a student permit after finding a university face two problems: (1) Lithuanian law does not permit in-country visa category changes from tourist to student in most circumstances; (2) overstaying the 90-day Schengen limit creates an entry ban. Always apply for the national D visa before traveling to Lithuania. The student D visa is issued as a multiple-entry permit, not a single entry national visa, so you can travel home and return during your studies. Note that students are not exempt from registering a Temporary Residence Permit after arrival — the D visa alone is not enough for the full study period.

2. Full documents checklist — Lithuania student D visa 2026

The following documents make up the complete set of required documents for a Lithuanian student national D visa application, updated June 2026 based on current Lithuanian consulate and Lithuanian embassy requirements. From our Vilnius desk — pre-submission review saves 2–4 weeks
The Birlay Lithuania package includes a pre-submission document review before any file goes to the consulate. The most common issues we catch: invitation letter missing AIKOS code (university admin oversight — easily fixed in 24 hours); health insurance minimum cover below €30,000 (student bought a budget travel policy); bank statements covering only 2 months (requirement is 3 months). Each of these caught before submission saves a 2–4 week delay from a consulate request for additional documents.

3. Financial proof requirements — what the consulate actually verifies

Lithuanian consulates require evidence that you have sufficient financial resources to cover your tuition fees, studies, and living costs at a Lithuanian higher education institution without becoming a burden on public funds. The 2026 standard is €3,000–5,000 in accessible liquid funds, verified by 3 months of bank statements. Note this is separate from tuition fees, which most students pay directly to the university; the consulate wants to see living-cost funds on top of any tuition already settled. As a non-EU citizen applying to study in Lithuania, you should expect the consular officer to check that these details are consistent across every document in your file.

What counts as acceptable financial proof

  • Personal bank statements: 3 months of statements from your personal bank account showing a consistent minimum balance of €3,000–5,000. Lump-sum deposits made the week before the consulate appointment are noted and may be questioned.
  • Sponsor letter + sponsor bank statements: if a parent or other family member is funding your studies, a notarised sponsor letter stating their relationship to you and their commitment to fund your studies, plus the sponsor's 3-month bank statements, is accepted. The sponsor's balance should reflect €3,000–5,000 plus evidence of ongoing income (payslips or business income).
  • Scholarship award letter: if you hold a scholarship that covers tuition and/or living costs, an official award letter from the accredited institution or government programme is accepted as partial or full financial proof.

What does NOT count as financial proof

Fixed deposits, property, and loans do not satisfy the requirement
  • Fixed term deposits that cannot be accessed during the study period — the consulate requires liquid, accessible funds
  • Property valuations or land deeds — illiquid assets are not accepted
  • Personal loans taken out specifically to show funds (consular officers identify this pattern from loan draw-down date matching application date)
  • Cryptocurrency holdings — not accepted as verifiable financial proof at Lithuanian consulates
The €3,000–5,000 figure covers approximately 6–10 months of Vilnius living costs. Consulates may accept lower figures (€2,500 minimum in some cases) if accommodation is pre-paid and confirmed in writing by the university dorm, reducing the required living cost buffer.

4. Application process step by step — how to file the D visa

1

Verify AIKOS registration of your programme (before anything else)

Go to aikos.smm.lt and search for your programme by institution name and programme title. AIKOS is the recognised state registry for every Lithuanian university — Mykolas Romeris University, ISM, LCC International University, Vilnius University, and Vytautas Magnus University all appear there, but you must confirm your specific programme (not just the institution) is listed and note the AIKOS code. We check several universities at once for students who are still deciding. This takes 5 minutes and prevents the most common rejection reason. Our Vilnius desk does this check as step zero of every application we manage — across 2026 we have not yet had an AIKOS-anchored file from any of these recognised higher education institutions rejected on eligibility grounds.

2

Apply to the university and obtain acceptance + invitation letter

Apply to your chosen AIKOS-registered university. After acceptance, formally request the kvietimas (invitation letter). Confirm the letter includes: institution name, AIKOS registration number/code, programme name, AIKOS programme code, your full name as on passport, start date, duration, and tuition amount. Return the letter for correction if any field is missing — consulates check all fields.

3

Book consulate appointment and prepare documents

Find the Lithuanian consulate serving your country at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (urm.lt). Book an appointment — some consulates (particularly for West Africa, which is served via Warsaw) have longer appointment lead times. Prepare all of the following documents from the checklist above. Translate any documents not in English or Lithuanian to English (certified translation where required by your specific consulate). Some consulates also require a recent police clearance certificate from your home country and may schedule a short visa interview — at our Vilnius desk we prep every student for the three questions that come up most: why this study programme, who is funding you, and what your future plans are after graduation.

4

Attend consulate appointment and submit application

Attend your appointment with originals AND copies of all documents. Pay the consular fee (approximately €60–80). Biometrics (fingerprints) are taken at this appointment if required by the consulate. Retain the receipt for your application.

5

D visa issued — collect and travel

Processing takes 4–8 weeks from complete submission. The D visa is typically issued as a sticker in your passport with an entry window (e.g., valid from/to). Travel to Lithuania before the entry window closes. Your D visa allows you to enter and begin your programme.

6

Register Temporary Residence Permit within 3 months of arrival

After arriving in Lithuania, file an application for a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) with the Migration Department within 3 months. The TRP is your long-term residence document and gives full Schengen travel rights. Required: passport with D visa, university enrollment confirmation, proof of accommodation, financial means evidence, health insurance. See Lithuania student residence permit 2026 for the full TRP process.

5. Processing timeline by country — 2026 data from our intakes

PakistanIslamabad (LT Embassy)5–8 weeksStandard; additional scrutiny may apply for some regions — complete documentation critical

UkraineWarsaw, Kraków (LT Consulate)3–5 weeksFast-tracked for Ukrainian nationals under EU temporary protection frameworks

Updated June 2026: these timelines reflect our most recent intake data and are consistent with the 4–8 week standard cited by the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You can also track your file in the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS) once it has been registered. Timelines can extend if the consulate requests additional documents — complete initial submissions prevent this. For students across Eastern Europe and the wider Europe region who already hold Schengen residence, see the FAQ below on applying from inside the EU. Lithuania remains one of the most affordable doorways into Europe for non-EU students, with a genuine student life and a small, welcoming international culture in Vilnius and Kaunas.

6. When Lithuania D visa is NOT right for you — the honest negatives

We recommend Lithuania to the majority of our non-EU student clients who want an EU degree at low cost. But we also tell students when Lithuania is not the right route.

You need a scholarship to afford tuition
Lithuania has no government-funded scholarship programme for non-EU international students equivalent to Hungary's Stipendium Hungaricum. MRU at €3,176/yr is cheap for an EU degree, but you still pay tuition. If full-tuition scholarship is a hard requirement — not a preference, a hard requirement — Hungary's Stipendium Hungaricum covers full tuition and provides a living allowance. Our Vilnius desk handles both Lithuania and Hungary applications; we can run both simultaneously if scholarship dependency is a factor.
You need a permit in under 30 days
The Lithuania D visa takes 4–8 weeks. The Temporary Residence Permit registration after arrival takes additional time. If you need residence status in under 30 days, Lithuania cannot deliver this. The UAE ICA fast-track delivers Emirates ID in 10 days. Cyprus delivers a pink slip in approximately 90 days but the initial D visa equivalent for Cyprus is faster in some cases. For urgent timelines, discuss UAE or Cyprus alternatives with our team.
Your programme is not AIKOS-registered
If the programme you want — a specific short course, a professional development certification, a language school — is not on the AIKOS registry, Lithuania does not offer a student D visa basis for it. You would be looking at a tourist visa for the duration, which does not confer residence rights, work rights, or post-study options. AIKOS registration is not negotiable. If the programme you want is not registered, we will tell you directly rather than waste your time on a D visa application that will be rejected.
You want to bring a spouse or children immediately
Dependent family member visas in Lithuania require a separate application and evidence of sufficient additional funds beyond the student's own requirements. A student's own employment during studies is capped at 20 hours per week during term — at roughly €6–8 per hour, those hours per week of part-time work typically do not meet the financial threshold for sponsoring family members. We tell families from India, Pakistan, and the CIS this upfront: the student visa does not let you bring a spouse or children on the strength of part-time student employment alone. If bringing family members from day one is a hard requirement, discuss Malta or Cyprus with us — both offer student routes with clearer dependent family accompaniment frameworks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need IELTS for a Lithuania student visa?

IELTS is not required for the D visa application itself — it is a university admission requirement, not a consulate requirement. For most English-medium programmes at MRU, ISM, LCC, and VU, an English proficiency letter from your previous school or university (confirming English was the medium of instruction) is accepted instead of IELTS. The consulate does not independently check English language ability — it relies on the university's acceptance decision and invitation letter. Some competitive research programmes at VU may require IELTS 6.0, but this is programme-level, not institution or consulate level.

Can I apply for a Lithuania student visa from inside the EU?

If you are currently residing legally in another EU or Schengen country (on a residence permit or valid visa), you may be able to apply for a Lithuanian student national D visa at the Lithuanian consulate in that country or at the consulate serving that territory. In some cases, students on a valid Schengen C visa who are enrolled in an AIKOS-registered programme can apply at the Lithuanian consulate in the country where they currently are. This is country-specific and case-specific — contact the Lithuanian consulate directly, or our Vilnius desk can advise based on your current residence status.

What happens if my Lithuania student visa application is rejected?

Lithuania consulates provide rejection reasons in writing. The most common reasons are: (1) no AIKOS-registered enrollment, (2) insufficient financial proof, (3) incomplete documentation, (4) health insurance below minimum cover, (5) programme of study not credible as full-time study. Rejections for reasons (2)–(5) can typically be reapplied with corrected documentation. Rejection for reason (1) requires either switching to an AIKOS-registered programme or accepting that Lithuania is not the right route. Our Vilnius desk reviews all files before submission specifically to prevent these rejection reasons.

How much money do I need in my bank account for a Lithuania student visa?

Lithuanian consulates require evidence of €3,000–5,000 in accessible, liquid funds — verified by 3 months of bank statements. The lower end of this range (€3,000) may be accepted when university accommodation is pre-paid and confirmed in writing, reducing the required living cost buffer. The higher end (€5,000) is standard for students who have not pre-paid accommodation. Fixed deposits, property valuations, and loans do not satisfy this requirement — the funds must be liquid and accessible.

Can I apply to Lithuanian universities without an agent?

Yes — all five AIKOS-registered universities we work with accept direct applications through their admissions portals. The AIKOS fast-track document preparation (verifying AIKOS registration, reviewing the invitation letter, preparing the D visa file) can technically be done independently. However, the most common D visa rejection causes — missing AIKOS code in the invitation letter, incorrect health insurance minimum cover, financial proof format — are things our pre-submission review catches before they reach the consulate. The Birlay Lithuania package is not required but it does measurably reduce the risk of avoidable delays.
