Russia student visa: documents and steps in 2026

To get a Russia student visa, your university first requests an official invitation from the migration directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (usually 25 to 45 days). You then apply at a Russian embassy with your passport, online form, photo, invitation and HIV certificate and receive a single-entry visa for up to 90 days, which is extended in Russia after you register and pass the medical exam and fingerprinting.

How does the Russia student visa process work?

The Russia student visa is a paper visa you get in three stages: your university requests an official invitation, you apply at a Russian embassy or visa centre in your home country with that invitation, and after you arrive the university helps you register, finish medical checks and extend the visa. You cannot do the second stage before the first, so the invitation sets your whole timeline.

The visa is issued for the purpose "study". Moscow State University (MSU) describes it as an ordinary educational visa and says the consulate issues it in up to two weeks. Plan for two to three months from admission to arrival, and longer if your consulate is busy in August and September.

Who issues the invitation and how long does it take?

The invitation is issued by the Main Directorate for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, and only the university can request it for you. You send the university your application form, a consent to process personal data and scans of the main passport pages. Lomonosov Moscow State University says the process usually takes 25 to 45 calendar days, depending on your country.

Kazan Federal University (KFU) gives a similar picture: at least 45 calendar days for fee-paying students and at least 30 days for students on the Russian government quota. Quota students usually do not receive a separate invitation. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation sends a visa instruction to the embassy instead, and you get a reference number. KFU also warns that the university cannot guarantee the invitation will be issued, so do not buy a ticket before you have it.

Higher School of Economics (HSE University) notes that an invitation is valid for 90 days, so you need to apply for the visa soon after you receive it.

Which documents does the consulate ask for?

Every Russian consulate asks for the same core set: passport, online application form, photo, invitation and HIV certificate. Some add your diploma and proof that your fees are arranged. The exact list depends on the consulate, so print the page of the embassy where you will apply.

Two details catch many applicants. First, the HIV test date: the Embassy of Russia in Bangladesh asks for a test no older than three months on its visa page, while Kazan State Medical University tells students to take it no earlier than one month before entering Russia, because it may be checked again after arrival. If your departure date is close, the stricter one-month rule covers both. Second, your name must be written exactly as in your passport on every document and list.

How long is the first Russian student visa valid?

Your first student visa is single-entry and valid for up to 90 days. The Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) and MSU both describe the first visa this way. With it you can enter Russia once and leave once, so do not plan a trip home during your first three months.

After you arrive, the university applies to extend it. HSE University says the visa is converted to multiple-entry and that a student visa cannot be extended for more than one year at a time, so you repeat the extension every year until you graduate. MSU lists a state duty of 1,600 RUB (≈ $20) for the extension.

What must you do after arriving in Russia?

You have three deadlines after arrival: registration, medical examination and fingerprinting. Go to your university's international office on the first working day after you land and bring your passport and migration card.

  • Migration registration: MSU sets 3 working days if you live in a university dormitory and 7 working days if you rent a flat. MSU warns that breaking registration rules can lead to deportation and an entry ban of up to five years.
  • Medical examination: required if you stay more than 90 days. Federal Law No. 162-FZ of 10 June 2026, in force since 1 September 2026, sets 30 calendar days from entry and an annual repeat. At MSU it takes two visits at least 3 working days apart and costs about 5,900 RUB (≈ $73).
  • Fingerprinting and photo: also within 30 calendar days according to MSU, and only after you have the medical results. It is free in the MSU migration department and costs 1,000 RUB (≈ $12) at the Multifunctional Migration Centre.
  • Visa extension: HSE University asks for documents no earlier than three months and no later than 45 calendar days before your visa expires; MSU asks for 30 days. MAI says processing takes 21 working days.

Many older university pages still say you have 90 days for the medical exam and fingerprinting. That was the rule introduced in December 2021. Follow the 30-day deadline: it is in the new federal law and in MSU's current instructions, and missing it can shorten your permitted stay.

Can you use the Russian e-visa to study?

No, the unified electronic visa cannot be used for study. The Russian Embassy in the USA lists its purposes as private, business and tourist visits and participation in scientific, cultural, social, economic and sports events. The Embassy of Russia in India gives the same list. Study is not on it.

The e-visa is also too short: it is valid for 60 days from issue, allows one entry and a stay of up to 16 days. A university cannot register you for study on it or extend it into a student visa, so you would have to leave and apply again with an invitation.

What is different in India, Nigeria, Pakistan and Bangladesh?

The core documents are the same, but the place and way you submit differ by country. These are the details we could confirm on the embassies' own pages in November 2026.

For students from India
  • India: the Embassy of Russia in India recommends applying through the official Russian Visa Centres in New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai. Individuals may also apply directly at the embassy or a consulate general after booking online. Under the India-Russia agreement the decision can be extended by up to 30 days.
For students from Nigeria
  • Nigeria: the Russian Embassy in Abuja receives student visa applications on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 to 12:00. It states that it does not cooperate with any commercial organisation for appointments and asks people to report paid booking offers to rusconsulabuja@mid.ru.
For students from Bangladesh
  • Bangladesh: the Embassy of Russia in Dhaka takes visa documents in person on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings and asks for an HIV test no older than three months. These details are on its work visa page, so confirm the study visa days with the consular department.
For students from Pakistan
  • Pakistan: the Russian Consulate General in Karachi lists education among the visa categories for Pakistani citizens but does not publish a document list. Ask your university's visa department for the current list.

If an agent says they can get you an embassy slot for money, remember that the embassy itself usually says this service does not exist. Univenter connects applicants directly with universities and checks documents before submission, which removes the middleman from the invitation stage.

What students say

He applied in November 2023 together with about 35 other scholarship winners and waited for hours outside the embassy gate. The interview lasted 10 to 15 minutes. The officer first questioned him harshly because the group list showed his nickname, not the name in his passport. He apologised, the interview continued, and his visa was ready 12 days later. He paid 10,000 BDT (≈ $81) for standard processing at the time.

Officers asked about her university, its exact name and city, who sponsors her and how, why she chose Russia and what she plans to do after graduating. Her advice is to say clearly that you are going to study, not to work, to give full answers rather than one word, and to bring the invitation, original certificates, a sponsorship letter and bank statements.

He describes a student who finished the preparatory course at one university and moved to Moscow without a proper transfer. The first university reported him, his visa was cancelled, his registration ended and his bank account stopped working. He was left without status and with a family loan of about 6,00,000 BDT (≈ $4,840). Before changing university, get the release and transfer documents done officially.

The Nigerian student's list includes a sponsorship letter and bank statements. Official consulate pages do not list them as standard, but the Riyadh embassy may ask for proof that your fees are arranged, so carrying them costs nothing. The 10,000 BDT (≈ $81) fee is the student's experience from 2023; the embassy page we checked does not publish the current amount.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get a Russian student visa?

Count 25 to 45 calendar days for the invitation and up to two weeks for the visa itself, according to Moscow State University. Busy embassies and document corrections add time, so start at least two to three months before classes begin.

Do I need an HIV test for a Russian student visa?

Yes, Russian consulates ask for an HIV certificate for stays longer than three months, which includes study. The test should be recent: within three months at most consulates, and Kazan State Medical University advises no earlier than one month before entry.

Can I convert a tourist visa or e-visa into a student visa in Russia?

No. The unified e-visa does not include study and allows only 16 days in Russia. You need a study visa issued on the basis of a university invitation, applied for outside Russia.

Is the first student visa multiple-entry?

No, the first visa is single-entry for up to 90 days. After arrival the university extends it, and it becomes multiple-entry for up to one year at a time.

What happens if I miss the medical exam deadline?

Since 1 September 2026 the federal deadline is 30 calendar days from entry for stays over 90 days. MSU warns that missing it can reduce your visa validity and force you to leave Russia, so book the exam in your first week.
