What is Kazan State Medical University?
Kazan State Medical University (KSMU) is one of Russia's oldest medical schools, a federal state university run by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and based in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. Its history starts on 14 May 1814, when the medical faculty of the Imperial Kazan University held its first meeting. For much of the 19th century it was the only school training doctors for the Volga region, the Urals and Siberia.
At the start of the 2026/27 year KSMU reported more than 2,200 international students from 50 countries.
Is KSMU the same as Kazan Federal University?
No. Kazan State Medical University (KSMU, kazangmu.ru) and Kazan Federal University (KFU, kpfu.ru) are two separate universities in the same city. Each has its own fees, entrance tests, deadlines, hostels and contract. Both teach General Medicine in English, which is why applicants mix them up.
KSMU grew out of Kazan University's medical faculty and has been separate since 1930. Before you pay, check that your contract, invoice and visa invitation all carry the name of the university you chose. If you are also comparing KFU, read our guide to Kazan Federal University.

How does admission to Kazan State Medical University work?
Admission for fee-paying international students runs in six steps, from documents to registration in Kazan. Here is the 2026 order as KSMU publishes it.
Send your application between 20 June and 15 July 2026 in person, by post or through the online form at kazangmu.ru/interedu/form. If places remain, extra dates are published after 25 August.
Fill in the invitation application form (Russian or English version) if you come from a country that needs a visa.
Sit the entrance tests on the KSMU education portal. You get a login and password the day before; the tests are proctored by webcam.
Sign the contract and pay as the contract states. Ask for the invoice in the university's own name and bank details.
Get your study visa at the Russian embassy or consulate with the invitation.
For students from Nigeria
The Russian Embassy in Nigeria takes student visa appointments on Monday to Wednesday mornings.
Arrive no later than 40 calendar days before your visa expires and, within 3 days, take your passport, visa and migration card to the Visa and Registration Office, Butlerova Street 49, main building, room 401.
Which documents do you need?
Before arrival you send copies; originals go in only after you reach Kazan. The list for specialist programmes is:
Application form and personal data consent form (download from the KSMU site).
Passport copy with a notarised Russian translation.
School-leaving certificate and mark sheet, legalised where required, with notarised Russian translations. Notarisation must be done in Russia or at a Russian consulate in your country.
Recognition (equivalence) certificate from the National Information Centre (nic.gov.ru), unless your country is on the exempt list.
NEET results (Indian citizens only).
After arrival: an HIV and hepatitis certificate issued no more than a month before arrival, Form 086-U, six photos 3×4 cm and an insurance policy if you have one.
Univenter connects applicants directly with universities and checks documents before submission, which saves a second round of translations.
What are the entrance tests and minimum scores?
For General Medicine you take two tests: Chemistry and English for the English-taught track, or Chemistry and Russian for the Russian-taught track, with a minimum of 65 points in each. In 2026 Chemistry was held on 18 July and English on 20 July, with a reserve day on 21 July for documented illness. Sample papers are on the specialist admission page.
For students from India
KSMU has also run in-person entrance tests in India: in September 2025 they took place at the Russian House in New Delhi and Chennai, with more than 180 applicants registered.
What is the Kazan State Medical University hostel like?
Kazan State Medical University has six hostels in the city, and the university gives places on application when beds are free. The newest, Hostel No. 7 on Amirkhana Street, is a 16-storey flat-type building opened in 2019 for 392 residents. Hostel No. 3 on Kirpichnikova Street reopened after full renovation on 29 August 2026.
Hostels have internet, a library or reading room and gyms, and students say they cook for themselves in the hostel kitchens. If no bed is free, the international faculty lists city hostels that rent long term with migration registration. Ask for your hostel place and its price in writing before you fly.
How does clinical training work at KSMU?
Clinical training at KSMU grows year by year: summer practice starts after year one, and from year four students rotate through hospital departments as a doctor's assistant. Under the 2025/26 General Medicine schedule, years 1 to 3 work as assistants to nursing staff (year 1 from 18 June to 6 July 2026), and years 4 and 5 as hospital and then outpatient doctor's assistants.
In the English-taught stream, the timetable for years 4 to 6 is built in clinical cycles. Patients speak Russian, so learn it from the first semester.
Kazan State Medical University ranking
Kazan State Medical University is ranked 19th in the RAEX 2025 subject ranking of Russian universities in medicine. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 it entered the 1500+ band and placed 293rd in the world for teaching, 2nd among Russian medical universities on that measure, according to the university.
Is KSMU recognised by the NMC and other regulators?
For students from India
India's National Medical Commission does not publish a list of approved foreign universities; instead its Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 set conditions on the course you take. You need at least 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship at the same university, teaching in English for the whole course, and eligibility for a medical licence in the country where you studied. Indian students must also pass NEET-UG before starting. Ask KSMU in writing how the English-taught General Medicine programme meets each condition.
Pakistani, Nigerian and Bangladeshi applicants should check their regulators (PMDC, MDCN, BMDC) before paying.
Can you study at KSMU on the Russian government quota?
Yes, in principle. KSMU's admission rules provide for quota places assigned by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. You apply on the official portal education-in-russia.com, choose up to six universities, and for the 2027/28 year the deadline for non-CIS applicants is 15 January 2027. It covers tuition and the preparatory course, not living costs.
What is life in Kazan like for international students?
Kazan is a city of over a million people about 800 km east of Moscow, where Russian and Tatar, Christian and Muslim traditions live side by side. Halal food is common, but ask to see the certificate: in December 2025 Tatarstan's Halal Standard Committee said only about a quarter of Kazan cafes calling themselves halal held one.
Winters are long and can reach minus 30 to minus 35 °C, while buildings and transport are heated. Foreign Visa and Mastercard cards do not work in Russia because of sanctions, so bring US dollars in cash for the first weeks and open a Russian account with a Mir card after you arrive.
What students say
A second-year Indian student says lectures and classes in General Medicine are in English, but she uses Russian every day for shopping and talking to people in the city. Winters drop to around minus 35, but buildings and transport are heated. Her advice: study steadily from the first year, because Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology build the base for the licence exam back home.

A third-year student from New Delhi says KSMU is considered a good university in India. As a Muslim, he chose Kazan partly because he expected life there to be easier for him. Most of his time, he says, goes on study.

A Tunisian student in his third year says most of his time and energy goes into study, including medical Russian classes where students learn to talk with patients. Russian and Tatar friends helped him with the language, and he likes Kazan's many museums and galleries.

Where a student and the official source differ: the video mentions 65% in Chemistry, Biology and English at school as the threshold. KSMU's 2026 page sets 65 points as the minimum in its own Chemistry and English tests and publishes no school-percentage cut-off; Indian applicants separately need NEET-UG.
