What is Tashkent Medical Academy now called?

Tashkent Medical Academy is now known as Tashkent State Medical University (TSMU). The President of Uzbekistan signed Decree No. PP-149 on 22 April 2025, which set up the new university on the basis of three Tashkent institutions: the Tashkent Medical Academy, the Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute and the Tashkent State Stomatological Institute. The new university started work in 2025/26, and students of the three institutions receive TSMU diplomas.

The same decree turned the academy's branches in Termez and Chirchiq into TSMU branches, while the Urgench branch became a separate institution, the Urgench State Medical Institute. Students still widely say "Tashkent Medical Academy" or "TMA", and the admissions website runs on the tma.uz domain.

How old is the university and where is it?

The university traces its history to 13 April 1919, when Turkestan State University announced a medical faculty in Tashkent. It became the Tashkent State Medical Institute in 1931, later split into the First and Second Tashkent State Medical Institutes, which Decree No. UP-3629 of 19 July 2005 joined into the Tashkent Medical Academy. The main campus is at 2 Farabi Street in Tashkent, the largest city and capital of Uzbekistan.

Can you study MBBS in English at Tashkent Medical Academy?

Yes. The university runs an admission track for international students in English medium, and the programme is General Medicine, the local equivalent of an MBBS degree. Medical degrees in Uzbekistan such as Medical Treatment (Davolash ishi) and Pediatrics have lasted six years since 2017, when they were shortened from seven years.

In September 2026 the Government of Uzbekistan announced a plan for a new six-year General Medicine bachelor from 2027/28: five years of study plus a year of clinical practice. If you apply for 2027 or later, ask which programme you are joining.

How do you apply to Tashkent State Medical University?

You apply online, pass a Zoom interview and pay the first semester before the university sends a visa invitation. These steps come from the official announcement for the 2025/26 intake, the latest published as of November 2026:

  1. Send your documents: 12th grade marksheet or certificate, a recent passport-size photo and your passport or national photo ID.
  2. Pass the online interview: eligible candidates are invited to a Zoom interview held only by official university interviewers. Keep your original photo ID ready.
  3. Receive the Provisional Admission Letter: it arrives within 2 working days and carries a QR code you can verify on the government portal check.ijro.uz. The letter is a recommendation, not a guarantee of admission.
  4. Pay the first semester: within 7 calendar days, only to the official university bank account, with your full name and passport number on the payment slip.
  5. Submit a medical certificate: signed and stamped by a licensed doctor, confirming vaccination against varicella, rubella and measles, a normal chest X-ray with no tuberculosis, and fitness to study abroad.
  6. Get the visa invitation (TELEX) and the A-1 student visa: the university issues the TELEX only after payment and medical documents are confirmed. The announcement says no other visa type or e-visa is accepted.
  7. Register on arrival: bring the original passport, the original 12th grade certificate and the original health certificate with test reports.

The general page for foreign applicants also lists an application to the Rector, notarized copies of education documents with grades, a health certificate on form 086 and six photos sized 3.5 x 4.5 cm. Foreign students study on a paid contract and do not receive a state scholarship.

For students from India

Indian applicants: the university asks for your NEET scorecard at the first step. Without a qualifying NEET result you are not eligible to register as a foreign medical graduate in India, so check your NEET status before you send documents.

How much does Tashkent Medical Academy cost?

Tashkent State Medical University sets the tuition fee for foreign citizens, and the amount for your intake is written in your Provisional Admission Letter. Fee figures on agency websites differ from each other and are not official, so rely on the letter and on written confirmation from the university.

Fees are paid by contract, in foreign currency at the Central Bank of Uzbekistan exchange rate; keep the bank receipt and conversion certificate. Before you pay, ask the international office to confirm by email the yearly tuition for every year of the course, the hostel fee and any registration, insurance or visa extension charges.

What about the hostel and living costs?

The university's FAQ for foreign applicants states that a dormitory is provided for foreign citizens. Students in the videos below say that first-year international students may also rent a private apartment in the city instead. Ask the international office for the current hostel fee in writing, and budget separately for food, transport and winter clothes.

Students show an indoor cafeteria, an outdoor cafe and grocery points on campus, with city buses stopping right outside.

Is MBBS in Uzbekistan recognised in India?

Recognition at home depends on your country's medical regulator, not on the university.

For students from India

NMC rules for Indian students: under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, your foreign course must last at least 54 months, be taught in English, include an internship of at least 12 months in the same foreign institution, and lead to registration as a doctor in the country that awarded the degree, on par with its own citizens.

Before you pay, ask the university in writing whether the English programme includes the 12-month internship in Uzbekistan and whether foreign graduates can get a licence to practise in Uzbekistan. Then check the latest notices on nmc.org.in.

On 1 April 2026 the NMC issued an alert note on admissions to medical institutions in Uzbekistan. It passes on concerns from the Embassy of India in Tashkent about intake beyond capacity, clinical training not being in English and agents' malpractice, lists several institutions, Tashkent State Medical University among them, and asks students to exercise extreme caution. In August 2026 the Embassy and the Haryana Medical Council explained that the alert is precautionary and is not a ban on admissions. Read the full note before you pay any fee, and keep the university's written answers to the questions above.

Students from other countries should do the same check with their own regulator, and look for the university in the World Directory of Medical Schools before enrolling.

What is life in Tashkent like?

Tashkent is a large, green capital with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Average daily highs reach about 36 °C in July, and on the hottest days the temperature passes 40 °C. In January the average low is around -1 °C. Most rain falls between November and May, with February, March and April the wettest months, so bring a good umbrella for the spring semester.

Uzbek is the state language and Russian is widely spoken in the capital, so basic Russian helps outside class.
