What is Bashkir State Medical University?

Bashkir State Medical University (BSMU) is a public medical university in Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan, a city of more than a million people. Its full official name is the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Bashkir State Medical University" of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (in Russian, ФГБОУ ВО БГМУ Минздрава России). It opened on 25 March 1932 as a medical institute and became a university in 1995.

Its English site says that in 2024 it had about 15,000 full-time students, about 5,000 of them from 64 foreign countries. Practical training runs in the university's own clinics, including a multidisciplinary hospital and a dental clinic, and in city hospitals.

Which programmes can international students study in English?

General Medicine (6 years), Dentistry (5 years) and Pharmacy (5 years) are offered in English, according to the university's undergraduate programmes page. Paediatrics, Preventive Medicine and Biology are taught in Russian only. Russian is taught alongside, because patients in Ufa speak Russian.

What are the Bashkir State Medical University fees for 2026/27?

For foreign students from outside Russia and the CIS who study through English, General Medicine costs 405,660 RUB a year (≈ $4,970) in years 1 to 3 and 339,780 RUB a year (≈ $4,160) in years 4 to 6. These figures come from rector's order No. 92 of 29 May 2026, as updated by order No. 123 of 17 July 2026, both published on the university's "paid education" page.

A separate General Medicine profile, "Primary health care and global health", costs more; check which profile your contract names.

Treat these as planning figures: fees are approved by a new order every year. Tuition does not include the hostel, insurance, the visa, food or flights.

How do you apply to Bashkir State Medical University?

You can apply directly to the university by email; its FAQ says so. The steps on its admission page are:

  2. Receive the study invitation. It takes about 30 days and arrives by email.
  3. Get a student visa. Apply at the Russian embassy or consulate by 5 September. A tourist visa is not accepted.
  4. Arrive and register. Arrive by 15 September, telling the university a week ahead so a hostel place is kept. Take your passport and migration card to the Dean's Office for International Students (2a Teatralnaya Street); registration must be done within 3 days of entry.
  5. Take the entrance tests. Chemistry and Biology, from 20 to 25 September. Selection is competitive.
  6. Sign the contract and pay. You pay tuition, the visa processing fee and the hostel fee. Study begins on 1 October.

No English certificate is required, but applicants need working English. Those who fail the tests can join preparatory courses.

Which documents do you need?

Send copies first and hand in originals after arrival:

  • International passport, valid for at least 2.5 years from the date you apply.
  • School-leaving certificate and mark sheet (transcript), legalised and recognised in Russia where required.
  • Completed application form and visa invitation form.
  • Health certificate with your vaccination record, and an HIV status certificate.
  • For applicants under 18, parental consent to travel, certified by a notary.

Every document needs a certified Russian translation, with your name exactly as in your passport. Univenter connects applicants directly with universities and checks documents before submission.

For students from India

Is Bashkir State Medical University recognised by the NMC?

India's National Medical Commission (NMC) does not publish a list of "approved" foreign universities. Its Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 set conditions on the course instead: at least 54 months of study taught in English for the whole course, a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution, eligibility for a medical licence in the country where you studied, finishing within 10 years, and no transfer between universities. You must also qualify in NEET-UG before you start.

BSMU's course lasts 6 years, so the length condition is met. On language, the university's admissions FAQ states: "The official medium of teaching is Russian, except first 3 years taught with English-medium." Because the NMC rules ask for English for the whole course, ask the university to confirm in writing which language each year, including the clinical years and the internship, is taught in, and keep the answer.

To practise in India you must also pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), run by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). Across graduates of all Russian universities, the pass rate was 18.07% in June 2025 and 30.94% in December 2025. NExT has not replaced the FMGE yet.

What does the hostel cost and what is it like?

Every foreign student admitted to BSMU is offered a place in a university hostel, and the university's application guide says rooms are usually shared by four people. The hostels have Wi-Fi, a shared kitchen on each floor and reading rooms, with shops and bus and tram stops nearby.

Rules are the same for all students: no alcohol or smoking, no overnight guests, quiet hours from 23:00 and a pass at the entrance. The hostel fee is not listed on the website, so ask the international office for the 2026/27 rate in writing.

How much money do you need to live in Ufa?

The Government of the Republic of Bashkortostan set the 2026 subsistence minimum for a working-age adult at 18,373 RUB a month (≈ $225). It covers only basic food and services, not the hostel, books or winter clothes.

The university also names a medical check-up on arrival (about 4,000 RUB one-off (≈ $49)) and medical insurance (about 4,500 RUB a year (≈ $55)). From 26 July 2026 the state duty for a multiple-entry visa, needed to extend your stay each year, is 6,000 RUB one-off (≈ $74).

Visa and Mastercard cards issued outside Russia do not work there, so plan how money will reach you before you fly, bring cash for the first weeks and open a Russian account with a Mir card after you register.

What is life in Ufa like for international students?

Ufa has long, snowy winters and warm summers, so buy a proper winter coat and boots soon after you arrive. Students get around by bus, tram and taxi.

Learn basic Russian early; daily life runs in Russian. Russia is generally calm for students who follow the rules, but international students report racist remarks and incidents in Russian cities. Carry your passport and registration, avoid late-night conflicts and keep the international office's number in your phone.
