MBBS in Russia: what students actually say about fees, exams and life

MBBS in Russia is a 6-year General Medicine degree that costs far less than a private medical seat in India, Pakistan or Nigeria. It works well for students who pick an English-medium programme that meets their home regulator's rules, learn Russian from year one and keep studying for the licensing exam. It goes wrong when students choose a university because an agent promised "no NEET needed", ignore the language, or treat the first years as a break.

Is MBBS in Russia valid in India and other home countries?

For students from India

A Russian medical degree is valid in India only if the whole programme meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021. The degree must take at least 54 months, be taught in English, include a 12-month internship at the same university, and give the graduate the right to practise in Russia on the same terms as a Russian citizen. The course must be completed within 10 years of joining.

Since May 2018, Indian citizens who want to practise at home must also qualify NEET-UG before they start a medical course abroad. Graduates then pass the licensing exam in India (FMGE today, NExT once it replaces FMGE) and complete a further 12-month supervised internship in India.

Pakistan (PMDC), Nigeria (MDCN) and Bangladesh (BMDC) run their own recognition rules and licensing exams. Check your regulator's current list and conditions before you pay any fee; we cover each country in separate guides.

How much does MBBS in Russia cost in total?

Tuition is the largest cost, and it differs a lot by university and city. The figures below come from the universities' own fee pages, not from agent price lists.

UniversityTuition per year (English medium)Year of fee
Kazan State Medical University475,000 RUB (≈ $5,890)2024/25
North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov440,000 RUB (≈ $5,460)2024/25

Fees are set in roubles and usually rise each year. Always ask the university for the fee of your intake year in writing.

On top of tuition, budget for the hostel, medical insurance, food, a winter wardrobe, flights and the yearly visa and registration paperwork. Be careful with older "total cost" figures on YouTube and agent sites: many were calculated before the rouble rate and fees changed, and some are lower than today's tuition alone. Students in the videos below agree that the first year usually costs more than it should, because families send extra money while the student settles in.

Is the course really taught in English?

It depends on the programme, and this is the single most important thing to check. Students describe two types of programme:

  • Fully English-medium: all 6 years are taught in English. This is the type NMC requires.
  • Bilingual: roughly the first 3 years in English, then clinical years in Russian. A bilingual programme can fail the NMC English-medium condition, so get the language of every year in writing.

Even on a fully English programme, patients in Russian hospitals speak Russian. Students who did not learn the language in years 1 to 3 say they could only watch during clinical rotations in years 4 to 6, instead of taking histories and examining patients themselves.

What do students actually say about MBBS in Russia?

We watched the most-viewed videos by students and graduates who study or studied medicine in Russia, and left out channels run by admission agencies. Here is what they agree on.

A first-year shock is the freedom. At 18 or 19, with no parents around and more money than usual, many students build habits they cannot afford later. When the allowance shrinks, some take long shifts at delivery and fast-food jobs and start missing classes.

English is useful in the classroom and almost nowhere else. Buying groceries, taking a taxi and, most of all, clinical rotations need everyday Russian.

Practical anatomy is taught in English with real specimens and cadavers, in a corridor that works as an anatomy museum. The formalin smell is strong, so students wear masks, caps and lab coats.

The rules for foreign graduates in India changed again and again during six years of study, which kept students anxious. A few batchmates cleared USMLE Step 1 in their fourth year while keeping up with university exams, so it is possible, but only for students who study steadily from the start.

How hard are the exams, and what happens if you fail?

Russian universities test every subject with exams, and students name Histology, Pathological Anatomy, Pharmacology and Neuroanatomy among the hardest. Students say a failed exam usually gets two retake attempts. Failing those can mean repeating the year or being dismissed, which costs a full academic year of tuition and living expenses. The exact rules differ by university, so read your university's academic regulations in the first month.

For students from India

Students also warn that the pressure is lower than during NEET preparation in India. Many strong students lose momentum, then try to cram for FMGE in years 5 and 6, studying 8 to 12 hours a day. With roughly 1 in 4 candidates passing FMGE, steady study from year one matters more than the university's name.

What is daily life like for a medical student in Russia?

  • Winter: in northern cities, temperatures of −30°C are normal and the sun may not rise before 9–10 am in December. Morning classes in the dark are what students find most draining.
  • Hostels: university hostels are the cheapest option, usually with shared kitchens and bathrooms on each floor.
  • Food: Indian spices and ingredients are hard to find outside big cities; most students cook together.
  • Part-time work: students mention delivery, fast-food and English-speaking clubs. Work inside hospitals requires good Russian.

Frequently asked questions

Can I study MBBS in Russia without NEET?

Some Russian universities admit students without NEET, but Indian citizens who study medicine abroad without qualifying NEET first cannot get a licence to practise in India. Years studied before the NEET result do not count.

How many years is MBBS in Russia?

The General Medicine degree takes 6 years. Indian graduates then complete a 12-month supervised internship in India after passing the licensing exam.

Is MBBS in Russia cheaper than in India?

Yes, compared with private medical colleges. Students quote 80,00,000 INR (≈ $84,100) to over 1,00,00,000 INR (≈ $105,000) for a private seat in India, while official Russian tuition fees are around 440,000–475,000 RUB a year (≈ $5,460–$5,890) at the universities listed above.

Do I need to learn Russian if my course is in English?

Yes. Lectures may be in English, but patients, shops and offices use Russian, and clinical training in years 4 to 6 depends on it.

Can I take USMLE or PLAB after MBBS in Russia?

Yes. Graduates of Russian medical universities sit USMLE and PLAB, and some students take USMLE Step 1 during their studies. These routes are expensive and need strong English and steady preparation.
