How much does MBBS in Georgia cost? Fees by university

MBBS in Georgia fees at the main English-medium programmes range from about 5,000 USD a year to 4,000 USD a semester, as of November 2026. Georgian universities publish the fee in US dollars, but most of them take payment in lari at the National Bank of Georgia rate on the day you pay. In Georgia the degree is called Medical Doctor (MD), not MBBS; it is the same six-year primary medical qualification.

Fees come from each university's own fee page or student guide. Tbilisi State University gives the fee per semester in its 2025-2026 Faculty of Medicine guide; Georgian American University also lists a six-year total of 38,880 USD in total. Tbilisi Medical Academy adds a registration fee of 300 USD one-off and a reservation payment of 2,100 USD one-off before enrolment is confirmed, plus health insurance. Universities review fees every year, so ask for the fee for your intake in writing.

Tbilisi State Medical University

Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU) is the best-known name among Indian applicants, and it runs a six-year English-medium MD programme of 360 ECTS credits. Its admission rules for foreign citizens ask for a passport, a school-leaving certificate, a B1 certificate in the language of the programme, an online interview and a consent letter. The fee is not listed on the pages we checked, so ask the admissions office for the current figure. We cover the university in detail in a separate guide.

Is a Georgian MD degree recognised?

Yes, inside Georgia and for most international exams, as long as the programme is accredited by NCEQE. NCEQE has held WFME recognition since 18 November 2018, for ten years. This matters for the United States: since 2024 only graduates of schools accredited by a WFME-recognised agency can get ECFMG certification and sit the USMLE.

Under the Law of Georgia on Medical Practice, an MD graduate of any citizenship can work as a junior doctor without extra exams, under the supervision of a licensed doctor. Independent practice in a specialty needs postgraduate training and the state certification exam. Each home country then sets its own rules for foreign graduates, so check your home regulator before you pay.

For students from India

NMC rules for Indian students in Georgia

For Indian students, the key check is the National Medical Commission (NMC) Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021. A course you join after 18 November 2021 must last at least 54 months, be taught in English, and include a 12-month internship in the same foreign university, with no part of the training done elsewhere. You must also hold a licence to practise in the country where you studied, on the same terms as its citizens, and finish the course within ten years. After that you take the licensing exam in India (FMGE, to be replaced by NExT) and a 12-month supervised internship in India.

You also need to qualify NEET-UG before you go. The NMC made this a condition for medical study abroad in its public notice of December 2018, and the Embassy of Georgia in India lists the NEET score card among the D3 visa documents for MBBS.

India and Georgia read the licence rule differently. On 14 October 2026 NCEQE published a 17-point statement saying the Georgian MD fits the FMGL rules: six years, a sixth-year internship, teaching in English (apart from at least 12 ECTS of Georgian for talking to patients) and a registration number from the Regulation Agency for Medical and Pharmaceutical Activities that lets graduates work as junior doctors. Earlier, in October 2026, the NMC answered a candidate's grievance, as reported by PTI, that junior doctor status counts only if it legally permits practice at the required level, and that the question will be decided by Georgian law. Until the NMC publishes a final position, ask the university in writing how its graduates meet Regulation 4(b), and keep the answer.

How do you get admission to MBBS in Georgia?

Admission for foreign students goes through the university and then the state. Foreign applicants are admitted without Georgia's Unified National Exams; universities check your school documents and language level, and many hold an interview. After the university accepts you, it sends your file for approval, and the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia issues an order allowing you to study. At TSMU, for example, the last step is filing your consent letter with NCEQE.

  1. Choose an NCEQE-accredited English-medium MD programme and check its fee on the university's own site.
  2. Send your passport, school-leaving certificate and transcript, and a language certificate (TSMU, for example, asks for B1).
  3. Attend the online interview if the university holds one and sign the consent letter.
  4. Wait for the university's admission order and the Ministry order, then apply for the visa.

Documents usually have to be translated into Georgian and notarised. The Embassy of Georgia in India asks that educational documents be apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs before you apply for the visa.

Which visa and residence permit do you need?

Students come to Georgia on a D3 study visa and then switch to a study residence permit. You apply for the visa online at geoconsul.gov.ge and submit it at the embassy or its visa centre. The checklist of the Embassy of Georgia in India asks for the Ministry order allowing you to study, the university's admission order, proof of accommodation, proof of funds for the last three months, travel and health insurance, a ticket booking and a visa fee of 20 USD one-off.

Once in Georgia, you apply to the Public Service Development Agency for a study residence permit. You need proof of lawful stay, a certificate from the university with the length of study and proof of money. Money in your own bank account counts, and the monthly amount must be at least double the official subsistence minimum for an average consumer, which Geostat publishes every month. The fee depends on speed: 300 GEL one-off (≈ $116) for a decision on the 30th day, 450 GEL one-off (≈ $173) on the 20th day and 600 GEL one-off (≈ $231) on the 10th day.

What does it cost to live in Georgia as a student?

Students who filmed their budgets say a shared flat in Tbilisi plus food and bills comes to roughly 450–500 USD a month, as of 2024. Prices are in lari in daily life, while rent is often quoted in dollars. Use these figures as a rough guide and check current rents before you sign anything.

Students also mention costs that agency quotes leave out: the residence permit every year, insurance, document translations and flights home. Add these to tuition when you plan six years.

Is Georgia safe for international students?

Georgia is generally safe for students in daily life, but you should follow the news. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) reported in September 2026 that protests in Tbilisi had passed 650 consecutive days, mostly around the Parliament building on Rustaveli Avenue, and that some ended in clashes with police. Foreigners who join political demonstrations may face questions at the border or be refused re-entry, so stay away from them. The FCDO also advises against all travel to the Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Students of colour describe stares and some passive prejudice, mostly from older people, rather than open hostility. English is common at universities but less so in shops and with older patients, so basic Georgian helps both in the city and on hospital rotations. The climate is milder than in Russia or Kazakhstan: Tbilisi has hot summers and short cold winters, while Batumi on the Black Sea coast is wetter.

What students say

Book a student hostel for your first four or five months instead of signing a flat lease on arrival. By then you understand how local landlords work and what a fair rent is. From the airport, order a Bolt or Yandex taxi for about 30–35 GEL one-off (≈ $12–$13); the drivers waiting outside can ask up to 100 USD one-off.

Older people sometimes stare at Indian and other foreign students, and English is not widely spoken in shops. Learning simple Georgian words for thank you, sorry, excuse me and how much made everyday life much easier.

The total for six years, tuition and living together, came to about 60,00,000–70,00,000 INR in total (≈ $63,500–$74,000), while the agent's quote was close to 35,00,000 INR in total (≈ $37,000). The quote left out living costs, the residence permit, insurance and certification fees.

Georgia felt safe for us as women, and the university buildings are modern. The hard part is language in hospitals: without Georgian you struggle to take a patient's history, so extra practical courses helped.

One student said the residence permit must be filed within 40 days of arrival. The Public Service Development Agency page does not give a 40-day rule; it asks for proof of lawful stay, so the safe reading is to apply well before your visa ends. The same students also said graduates must pass a local licensing exam in Georgian. Officially, NCEQE says graduates can work as junior doctors without extra exams, while the state certification exam is for specialty practice; how this fits the Indian licence rule is still being discussed with the NMC.
