What is Orenburg State Medical University?

Orenburg State Medical University is a public medical university in Orenburg, a regional capital in the south of the Urals close to the border with Kazakhstan. Its full official name is the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Orenburg State Medical University" of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (FGBOU VO OrGMU Minzdrava Rossii). The official register of the university gives 12 August 1944 as its founding date.

It started as a medical institute with one faculty of general medicine and later added pediatrics, preventive medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, clinical psychology and nursing.

For international applicants the main programme is General Medicine (code 31.05.01), which is the Russian equivalent of MBBS. Graduates receive the Russian qualification "Physician" (vrach-lechebnik).

Can you study MBBS at Orenburg State Medical University in English?

Yes. OrSMU runs a separate group for foreign citizens who need a visa: General Medicine "with the use of an intermediary language (English)". The course lasts 6 years and is full-time. This group starts its academic year on 1 November, two months later than the Russian-medium stream.

"Intermediary language" means that lectures and classes are given in English, while you also study Russian from the first year. The university's own admission rules include a Russian language test even for this stream, so Russian is part of the plan from day one. From the third year you work with patients in city hospitals, and patients speak Russian.

How much are Orenburg State Medical University fees for 2026/27?

Tuition for a foreign student starting General Medicine in English in 2026/27 is 422,380 RUB a year (≈ $5,180) for the first year. The fee is set by the university's order No. 616 of 9 April 2026 and is published in Russian roubles. Fees by year:

Year of studyFee a year
Year 1422,380 RUB a year (≈ $5,180)
Year 2390,960 RUB a year (≈ $4,790)
Year 3334,840 RUB a year (≈ $4,100)
Year 4296,340 RUB a year (≈ $3,630)
Year 5275,380 RUB a year (≈ $3,370)
Year 6233,020 RUB a year (≈ $2,860)
All 6 years at these rates1,952,920 RUB in total (≈ $23,900)

The later years are what the order sets for students who enrol in 2026, but universities usually index fees each year, so treat the six-year figure as a floor, not a fixed price.

Tuition does not include the hostel, insurance, visa extensions, food or flights. The admissions office notes that a payment can take 5 to 7 working days to reach it, and paying is part of your consent to enrolment.

How do you apply to Orenburg State Medical University?

You apply directly to the admissions office (priyomnaya komissiya) for paid places, or through the Russian state portal Gosuslugi. For the November 2026 intake, the official schedule for foreign citizens in the English stream was:

  1. Documents accepted from 20 June 2026; the last day for those taking the university's own tests was 10 July.
  2. Entrance tests held from 13 to 23 July 2026: Chemistry and Russian language, minimum 45 points each.
  3. Competition lists published on 21 August, contracts and consent to enrol by 24 August, enrolment orders on 27 August.
  4. An additional autumn round for paid places for foreign citizens, with documents accepted until 25 November 2026 and enrolment orders on 30 November.

Dates for the 2027 intake will appear on the admissions site in spring 2027.

Which documents do you need?

The admission rules for 2026/27 list these documents for a foreign applicant:

  • Passport (identity and citizenship document).
  • School-leaving certificate with marks; a foreign certificate must come with a certificate of recognition of foreign education, unless Russian law or a treaty with your country removes this step. For paid places the recognition certificate is due by the end of contract signing.
  • Notarised translation into Russian of every document in another language (a consular translation also counts).
  • Legalisation of documents issued abroad, unless a treaty with Russia removes it.
  • Signed application form, consent to personal data processing and a photograph.

Univenter connects applicants directly with universities and checks the document set before it is submitted, which helps when translations and legalisation are new to you.

Free places through the Russian government quota are a separate route: you apply on education-in-russia.com, not to the university, by 15 January 2027 for the 2027/28 year (15 December 2026 for CIS countries).

For students from India

Is Orenburg State Medical University valid for NMC India?

The National Medical Commission (NMC) of India does not publish a list of approved foreign universities. Its Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 set the conditions your course must meet: at least 54 months of study, taught in English throughout, a 12-month internship in the same foreign institution, eligibility for a licence in the country of study, no transfer between universities, and then a supervised internship and the screening exam in India. You must also qualify in NEET-UG before you leave.

Before you sign, ask the university in writing how the English medium and the 12-month internship condition apply to your contract, and keep that letter with your documents.

For students from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria

If you plan to practise at home, check the current rules of your own regulator (PMDC in Pakistan, BMDC in Bangladesh, Nepal Medical Council, MDCN in Nigeria) for foreign medical degrees before you enrol, and keep the official course description and syllabus for your licensing application.

What does the hostel cost and how much do you need to live in Orenburg?

OrSMU has three hostels with 1,351 places in total: hostel No. 1 on Spartakovskaya Street (335 places), No. 2 on Nevelskaya Street (447) and No. 3 at Sovetskaya / Gorkogo / Dmitrievsky lane (569).

The university's order No. 92 of 26 January 2026 set separate monthly rates for foreign students, which are higher in the heating season (October to April):

HostelMay to SeptemberOctober to April
No. 1, foreign students1,234 RUB a month (≈ $15)1,770 RUB a month (≈ $22)
No. 3, foreign students1,713 RUB a month (≈ $21)2,220 RUB a month (≈ $27)

That order covered January to September 2026, so ask the admissions office for the rate in force when you arrive. Hostel places are allocated by the university, not guaranteed by the contract.

One student who lived very carefully in his first year says his family sent him about 7,000–10,000 INR a month (≈ $74–$106). Plan more than that, and keep an emergency fund for medical or travel surprises.

The climate is sharply continental. Long-term records give an average January temperature of about −12°C, with frosts of −25°C to −30°C on some days, and an average July temperature of about 22°C, with hot spells above 35°C.

What students say

Never skip a class, even in bad weather or when you are tired. Every missed class has to be made up later in a formal session called otrabotka, and those sessions pile up and cause real stress before exams.

In my first month I saved so hard that I waited for buses at about −23°C instead of taking a taxi. I got sick, and the medicine cost more than I saved. Use the bus, but do not punish your health.

Learn to speak Russian, not only to pass the exam. A friend scored top marks in the written test but could not talk to people in real life. Another student signed bank papers he did not understand and paid for extra services he never wanted.
